Autumn Statement comment: Rob Oliver – Chief Executive, CEA

Welcome support for three Is!

“Innovation, Infrastructure, Investment” was a welcome theme in the Autumn Statement – whilst the Chancellor had limited headroom for radical moves. Additional support for research and development was needed and we look forward to see how this will be delivered in practice. The construction equipment industry is becoming increasingly alive to new technology, so any boost to this trend will be well appreciated by CEA members.

A commitment to infrastructure spend is also helpful – we know our road system is crumbling in places and urgent work to arrest the decline is needed. A serious effort on housing investment has also been well overdue. All this adds up to a recognition that our economy must up its productivity, regardless of the Brexit headwinds. The construction sector as a whole, with equipment suppliers playing their part, has a big part to play in providing Britain with a sustainable economy.”
